Unos Santos no tan santos

Los escándalos de abuso de menores que rodean a la Iglesia católica empiezan a cobrar mucho mayor relevancia debido a la época que vivimos en donde el acceso a la información se ha vuelto un tema de suma importancia en muchos países del mundo. Uno de los escándalos más recientes involucra a la arquidiócesis de Nueva Orleans, la cual publicó en noviembre de 2018 una lista de 57 miembros del clero que presentan “acusaciones creíbles” de cometer durante décadas delitos sexuales entre ellos abuso sexual y aquellos relacionados con pornografía infantil. Uno pensaría que este es un caso más de acusaciones de este tipo en contra de miembros de la Iglesia; sin embargo, en este caso en específico hay una supuesta injerencia por parte de miembros ejecutivos de los Saints de Nueva Orleans.

De acuerdo con los abogados de las partes acusadoras, Greg Bensel, vicepresidente ejecutivo de comunicaciones de los Saints, usó correos institucionales de los Saints para asesorar a la arquidiócesis en cómo manejar la crisis y esconderla del conocimiento público. Uno se preguntará: ¿por qué los Saints se involucrarían en un tema tan incendiario y controversial? La respuesta está en que Gayle Benson, dueña de los Saints, es amiga íntima de Gregory Aymond, arzobispo de Nueva Orleans. Los Saints reconocieron que mantuvieron breve comunicación con la arquidiócesis respecto al tema; no obstante, los abogados sostienen que el involucramiento de los ejecutivos de los Saints no se reduce exclusivamente a comunicación en materia de relaciones públicas.

Se acusa a los ejecutivos de los Saints de incluso ayudar a determinar los nombres de la lista de miembros del clero acusados publicada en noviembre de 2018. Además, el juez que lleva el caso aprobó el 20 de febrero una solicitud por la parte acusadora de hacer públicos los correos en donde, según los abogados de las víctimas, se demuestra la profunda injerencia que tuvo el personal de los Saints en el manejo del escándalo por parte de la Iglesia.

¿Qué procede ahora en el ámbito deportivo para los Saints?

El diario The Athletic publicó que, de acuerdo a una fuente de la liga, los Saints no enfrentarían una investigación por parte de la liga a menos que los correos, de hacerse públicos, demuestren actituted erróneas por parte del equipo. El futuro de la franquicia puede tomar un giro drástico si se descubre una complicidad marcada de los ejecutivos de los Saints en el caso. Especulando un poco, en el peor de los casos, la presión de la opinión pública haría que la familia Benson venda la franquicia para darle un nuevo comienzo dejando este escánda,o en  lo cual sería lo más sensato. Una franquicia que solape pederastas no tiene cabida en ninguna liga profesional deportiva del mundo.
